NEW FACILITIES FOR MAPSL
MAPSL moved into its new premises at the start of 2022. These are located nearer to the entrance to Rochester Airport, so that visitors are not required to enter any part of the active airport. It comprises a hangar building with a floor area of approximately 90 ft x 50 ft which is slightly greater than the total floor area provided by the mixture of old life-expired buildings that had been used since the earliest days.
The hangar was built as part of the refurbishment of Rochester Airport under the Government's Thames Gateway Project, which also included the building of the new Hub complex and another new Hangar, along with the refurbishment of other parts of the airport. However, one runway was lost with the land being re-allocated to industrial use, yet to be commenced. Elsewhere on the Airport for visitors, there is a cafeteria in the Hub Building, with a viewing area alongside, so you can enjoy their time.
Large items can be brought into and out of the workshop via the hangar doors which lead directly onto the airfield. The interior has been partially divided to include a shop and visitors centre, an office, a machine shop, a compressor room, stores and a crew room. A mezzanine floor at one side provides additional working and storage areas. There is also a toilet and a sink, both with hot and cold running water. Single- and three-phase electrical are provided for tools and machines. The building has fire and burglar alarms integrated into the Airport systems.
Some people may remember our older, life-expired buildings, which included a lean-to extension behind Hangar 3, a former tea room brought up from the Brook in Chatham, a former urinal block and several portable buildings. Our new premises provide a far superior environment for our work and volunteers.
